That's a very good metaphor or analogy you drew between luck and the central message or theme of The Luck of Roaring Camp. About this theme, we have a proverb in English that reads: "easy come, easy go". In fact, the people in the Roaring Camp were living in desperate and harsh conditions and they didn't have any person to show love and affection to. Suddenly, the birth of a boy, which rarely happened there, changed their lives and attitudes. As a matter of fact, I think the presence of the little boy did not bring luck nor misfortune or bad luck to the Roaring Camp. They simply reacted or overreacted to this meager and natural phenomenon - the birth of a boy - in a weird way with exaggeration.
