Malinger GRE Vocabulary Flashcard

/məˈlɪŋ.gəʳ/ (verb)

Definition

to pretend to be ill to evade responsibility or avoid work, feign illness, shirk, fake illness, slack, take a sickie, skive, shun, eschew

Example

When an employee is unable to undertake the full duties of their role or they have high levels of sickness absence due to an illness, this can be difficult for employers to manage. From time to time, we all have unavoidable periods of illness, and need time to recover. In rare cases however, you may have concerns that an employee is not being genuine about an illness, in order to avoid work, do less work, or gain financial benefit e.g. company sick pay. This is known as malingering – when an employee pretends to be ill in order to escape duty or work.

Parts of speech

Noun: malingerer: a person who fakes illness to evade a responsibility

How to Ignore Negative Thoughts
Everyone experiences negative thoughts occasionally. While these sometimes help you avoid dangerous situations, they can also depress you and take a toll on your mental health. If you struggle with negative thinking, a short-term coping strategy is ignoring the thoughts when they enter your mind. Stop and breathe when you experience a negative thought. Distract your mind with a different, positive thought and other activities. Surround yourself with more positive people and media to reduce your negative thinking. For a more long-term strategy, keep a thought journal to assess your thoughts and develop coping strategies when you’re feeling negative.

To everybody’s chagrin, he openly abjured any fraternity and affinity with his close friends.

After years of adhering to a strict vegetarian diet, Tom decided to abjure his previous lifestyle in favor of a more flexible approach to eating. He realized that his body needed a broader range of nutrients that he wasn’t able to get from his vegetarian diet alone. This decision to abjure his former dietary restrictions was not taken lightly; it came after much deliberation and consultation with nutrition experts. By openly renouncing his past dietary choices, Tom felt liberated and more in tune with his body’s needs.
