  1. This story was kinda spooky.but I didn’t like it , the story just doesn’t make sense. But I have a question,
    What does appealingly means?

    • The word, appealingly in this short story means interestingly and attractively.

  2. I think the gist of this story is related to an old philosophical belief especially Eastern philosophy, as they have believed to destiny and fate or determinism and free will and have mentioned that every person had a predestined destiny and cannot change his/her own destiny. This is reflected in this story when Sergeant major said that an old fakir , a holy man, had put a spell on the monkey’s paw and wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow as it led to deep grief of Mr and Mrs white.

    • That is indeed the main theme of this short story. In other words, trying to intervene in or alter the natural course of life might yield dire consequences sooner or later, according to the philosophy behind this short story.

  3. It was an interesting and spooky story. But why didn’t Mrs.White wish for her son to come back herself?

    • I’m on this impression that all the 3 wishes should be made by the same person one after another.
