People’s moral judgments are often driven by emotion. And empathy for others seems to encourage altruism. Another emotion, called “elevation,” appears to inspire altruistic behavior, too. We feel elevation when we see another person act virtuously, such as by helping someone in need. Altruism also builds social connections. For example, studies show that people who are altruistic tend to be happier, to be healthier, and to live longer.

Altruism refers to a willingness to make major personal sacrifices for the benefit of others. People obviously vary a great deal in the extent to which they are inclined to be altruistic. Two studies were located on whether altruism is related to social status. These studies were not consistent. One indicated that individuals with more years of education were more altruistic. However, an experiment among college students attending a select university found that the participants in the experiment whose parents were lowest in social status were more likely to provide help to others than were those of upper-status parents.

The researchers found that simply looking at a person’s behavior or the activity of specific brain areas revealed nothing about the motive underlying his or her altruistic decisions. The way those regions of the brain communicate, however, differed significantly, depending on whether someone’s decision was empathy- or reciprocity-driven. Furthermore, selfish and altruistic, or prosocial, people processed these motives differently: Selfish people made more altruistic decisions when motivated by empathy but not reciprocity, and prosocial people made more altruistic decisions when motivated by reciprocity but not empathy.
