to trim and remove the skin or outer layer of something especially fruits and vegetables, trim off excess, peel, skin, shave, strip – cut away, trim, curtail, tidy up, reduce, clip, cut back, slim down, diminish, prune


Pare can mean the same as peel (to remove the peel or skin) if you use a knife (You can peel or pare an apple, but you can only peel a banana). In addition, pare means to cut off unnecessary bits or to reduce in size.
“I need to pare down the team to the most skilled players.”
“Pare off the ends of the radish and throw them away.”
“Your essay is too long. You need to pare it down to 500 words.”
