Patch Adams, a 1998 comedy-drama, tells the inspirational story of Hunter “Patch” Adams, a medical student who challenges traditional medical practices. Witnessing the suffering of others ignites a passion in Patch to become a doctor, but not in the typical way. He believes in treating the whole person, and that includes humor and compassion.

The film follows Patch’s journey through medical school as he clashes with the rigid establishment. His unorthodox methods, which involve clowning around and laughter therapy, are met with resistance from authority figures. However, Patch’s dedication to his patients and his ability to connect with them on a deeper level win over both the students and those he cares for.

Both Patch Adams and Dead Poets Society star Robin Williams as unconventional teachers who challenge rigid institutions. While Patch fights to bring laughter and humanity to medicine, John Keating in Dead Poets Society inspires his students to break free from stifling traditions and embrace the power of independent thought in literature. Patch Adams focuses on the doctor-patient relationship, while Dead Poets Society explores the transformative power of education. However, both films celebrate the importance of individuality to make a positive impact on those around them.

  1. Due to the system, medical students were not permitted to interact with patients until their third year, but Patch Adams believed that having a connection and speaking to patients was essential. This caused conflicts between Patch and the university.

Patch was known for his constancy and persistence. He found his way to treat patients despite the obstacles. For example, he established his own hospital in a house in the woods to provide free treatment.

As the old saying says, “laughter is the best remedy.” Laughing can make us more positive and healthier. Furthermore, it leads us to a higher frequency. Like the patients in the hospital when Patch made them feel better and make them laugh.

    • Thank you for your thorough comment on the film, Patch Adams.
I personally like the idea of thinking outside the box and being a maverick. Therefore, inaugurating an independent hospital turned out to be extremely appealing and delightful to me.
However, on many occasions, I was disgusted by his eccentric and bizarre behavior. In my modest opinion, the hospital board of directors could employ a professional clown instead of investing in educating a medical student.
