She began to busy herself with getting dinner ready. Staring out the window, her mind drifting as she peeled potatoes. She looked at what she had and grabbed a couple more potatoes for the pot. She would need enough for four hungry boys and one young man. She couldn’t believe that her babies were getting so big. She could still see all of them as babies. Happy, healthy, chubby bundles of love. Her thoughts grew maudlin as her eyes welled with tears threatening to spill down over her cheeks. Maudlin switched in a flash to anger as the thought of her two oldest and her husband with what they were about to face. A fierce urge to protect her own overwhelmed her, and she knew she would give her life to protect what was hers. A painful cramp in her hand brought her attention back to what she was doing. She had gripped the paring knife so hard that her fingernails left crescent shaped dents in the palm of her hand. She dropped the knife and rubbed at her hand to relieve the ache. It didn’t help. No matter how hard she rubbed, it wouldn’t remove the ache that was now rooted deeply in her heart.
