Verb: to fine someone as a penalty, penalize, punish, amerce – to cheat or deceive someone by fraudulent means, swindle, bilk, defraud, extract money from someone by taxation or fine

Example

A fine or mulct is the most common form of punishment for an offence given by the criminal courts. The judge will decide how much the fine is and any other costs you must pay including compensation to the victim of your crime. You must pay the fine by a certain date.
