It’s interesting to know that these Farsi letters that all have the same sound but different forms make distinct sounds in the Arabic language. However, in Persian phonology, all these letters make the same sound.
If you are a new Persian learner, you should know that unlike western languages like English, Persian or Farsi is written and read from right to left. You might also like to know that Persian and Arabic are not the same. For instance, the following 4 Persian letters and sounds do not exist in the Arabic language and phonology:
- گ /g/
- پ /p/
- چ /tʃ/
- ژ /ʒ/
Persian letters with the /z/ sound
In the Persian alphabet, there are 4 individual letters that represent the /z/ sound. However, in the Arabic language, all these 4 letters make distinct sounds. These 4 Persian letters that make the /z/ sound are listed below:

آذر – ذهن – غذا – کاغذ
Persian letter ض or ضاد
مریض – ضرر – راضی – ضربه
Persian letter ظ or ظا
ظهر – نظم – ظاهرا – عظیم

There are 3 letters in the Persian alphabet that represent the /s/ sound.

There are 2 Persian letters in the Farsi alphabet that have the /t/ sound.

Persian letters with the /gh/ sound
There are 2 letters in the Persian alphabet that represent the /gh/ sound. This sound does not exist in the English language, so non-Persian speakers should be able to articulate this sound clearly. Our long experience in teaching Persian to non-Persian speakers has proven that non-Farsi speakers cannot easily pronounce this sound in Farsi phonology.
It’s important to note that the /gh/ sound as a consonant in Farsi is slightly different from its counterpart in French or German as the /gh/ sound in Farsi is a stop sound, while the /gh/ consonant in French is relatively a fricative sound in phonetics and phonology.

The following 2 letters in the Persian alphabet make the /h/ sound.
Persian letter ه دوچشم
The letter ه دوچشم takes 4 different forms depending on its location in a word. To practice and learn these 4 distinct forms, it is recommended that our Farsi students install the Persian language on their devices and post comments at the bottom of our Persian lessons with videos. This way, by typing any word with the ه دوچشم letter, your device will automatically write the correct form of this letter in Farsi.

بله تیارا جان. واژه های “دوست” و “دست” شبیه به هم نوشته می شوند. فقط در واژه “دوست” یک حرف واو وجود دارد.
