What is teleworking?
Teleworking, also known as telecommuting, means working from home or remotely using modern technology and telecommunications to remain in touch with your employer or business. Teleworking allows individuals to work either at home, a local cafe with WiFi, or at a local telework center for one or more days each week, or full time.
The teleworker uses communication tools to carry out work duties from a remote location. Over the past twenty years, the practice has become much more common. The term remote working also means the same as teleworking.

Teleworking benefits
There are numerous benefits when it comes to teleworking. Here are a few:
Employee autonomy is one of the most obvious benefits of teleworking. Teleworking gives employees the ability to balance their professional and personal lives, set up their office wherever they want, and use any device. Teleworking means little or no commute, saving costs associated with travel. In addition, any time spent traveling is invested in work, meaning an 8-hour shift is limited to 8 hours and does not extend to 9-10 hours due to long-distance travel or traffic.
Since teleworking gives employees more time and flexibility to work from a space that they prefer, employee productivity improves. Being able to attend to personal and family matters on the spot is likely to resolve issues that might affect the work quality/productivity of an employee. When employees work from home with their own setup and devices, the need to procure equipment such as laptops and computers is reduced for the company.

Teleworking has been increasing in popularity in recent years, partly due to technological improvements that make teleworking more convenient. Workers are now more mobile, and companies are often operating with teams split between offices in different locations. Having telecommunication technologies in place that support teleworking ensure that your company meets the demands of today’s workplace environment.

Lack of telecommuting policy
A remote work policy sets the stage for what’s expected of your telecommuters. Without it, employees are more prone to the difficulties of working from home, while companies are ill-equipped to manage their telecommuters.
The fix: If you haven’t already, establish a remote work policy. An adequate policy sets some basic ground rules to enable effective management of a telecommuting staff, determine clear communication and collaboration channels, and put in place a course of action in case of tech-related issues.
