Vain 504 Absolutely Essential Words Lesson 29

/veɪn/ (adj)

extremely proud of one’s appearance, narcissistic, self-important, arrogant, conceited – abortive, futile, without any good result, otiose, fruitless, unsuccessful, worthless, ineffective, unproductive, in vain

Vain: having or showing an excessively high opinion of one’s appearance, abilities, or worth.

So vain is definitely not the right word for the women who come into my office. After all, these are not women posting selfie after selfie to instagram, or commenting to their friends constantly on how amazing they look. These are primarily busy moms and wives who actually spend very little time thinking about their appearance. And yet somehow they feel embarrassed for taking time and money out to do something to make themselves feel better.
