It wants to show the importance of freedom and the joy resulting from feeling to be free. Lack of freedom kill emotions and living without freedom in reality is like to be a fish out of water. It wants also to mention that sadness may not kill people but lack of freedom eventually kill them
As you said, freedom and liberty are the central themes of this short story. You will be upset with someone who takes away your freedom even if that person is so dear and close to you like your spouse.

She had a mixture of different feelings. You can read Armaghan’s comment right below and my replies, as well, to get the point.
In short, she had a heart attack because her expectations and anticipations of big changes did not come true.
This short story was written in the late 1800’s when women had lack of freedom from a male-dominated relationship.
We can understand through the text that at first she was sad about her husband’s death but when she had her time alone she realized that now she is free and she is not forced anymore to obey everything that her husband say.
But at the end she saw her husband alive and she was shocked and had an heart attack and the doctor assumed she died of the joy that kills, but we the readers know better what her real cause of her death was. Not only died she of heart disease, but also the rubbing of freedom.
There were two turning points in her life one after each other. Once she realized that her husband was dead, such a traumatic event! Then she was giving herself false hope about that turning point in her life and what would happen from that moment on. The second turning point was when she noticed that ironically her husband was alive, and the castle of her freedom had been built on sand. These two turbulent situations in rapid succession were too overwhelming for her to get along with, thus leading to her surprising death.
