English Question on Time of Death for Discussion by leaving text and voice messages asynchronously to get ready for IELTS and TOEFL
How might knowing when you’ll die help you plan your life? Is life enhanced by feeling that death could strike at any time?
If you knew someone was dying, would you tell them the truth or deceive them about it?
How many more years do you think you will live before departing this world?
1. I do not think so. Knowing the exact time of death add nothing more than stress to our lives. But without doubt appreciating that death sooner or later strike us and deeply understanding this point can enhance our lives . We can live a better and more compassionate and aimful lives.
2. Even as a doctor it is difficult for me to directly say a person that you are dying. I prefer to tell such horrible things to his/her close relative. Most of the time telling such thing especially in our culture leads to accelerating the break of a person. Even one of our best poet Saadi says that let another person bring a sad news.
3. I do not know and prefer not to know. But I wish to be wise enough to know that it comes one day and it is better for me to be ready. To be ready with performing my duty in the best way to my last point
Such a complete and thorough response! Thank you so much, Dr. Hooshmand!
As you said, as a doctor, it must be terribly hard to tell someone that they are dying, or their disease is terminal. Now that we’re talking about this, I thought about a great movie for our film criticism course forum for this session. The film is, The Bucket List, and it’s about 2 people who have cancer which is terminal. They’re dying and they decide to get the most out of their lives before their number is up.
1_ I well tell to my family that I’m gonna die and show my real emotions in the last of my life. It could yes.
2_ I would not tell her
3_ I can’t know that. Only god knows that
These questions are just hypothetical or imaginary so that we could have challenging discussions here in our comment forms to get more prepared for our online classes. You don’t need to take them seriously, Soroosh, especially about the time of death.
1. I believe many people including myself, don’t want to know the date of their death. It would be highly stressful, especially if it’d be close. And also I think that many of us reach a point that we forget about death, we are so busy with life and our challenges that we forget about how things can change completely in a blink of an eye.
2. Like if I were a doctor? If I were a doctor I believe it was my duty to tell the truth to my patient, and of course in a good and wise way.
But if I just saw the future, no. Except the person meant alot to me, I would tell them in a case we could prevent it.
3. I don’t know, but I have a feeling that still there is long way ahead of me.
I enjoyed your comment about the date of death.
I remember around 9 years ago, when I informed my mom about her terminal disease, I deeply wished I were in her shoes. She was writing in agony, and nobody was telling her about the cause, which was a progressive type of metastatic and incurable cancer. I surmise by knowing about her condition, she could deal with the situation much better. However, I believe I was broken by informing my mom about her illness.
Most people do not share this mindset. They may say in words that we are not afraid of death, but in practice, when faced with the death of their loved ones, they easily suffer from severe depression, which also leads to their premature death. Many people are afraid of death.
More people are many times more afraid of dying than of having an accident or losing their money and wealth.
If there is one thing we can be certain of in life, it’s that eventually we will die, that is, we will no longer be alive. defining death is much more complicated than it appears. But the truth is whenever we think about death, then there’s the feeling of fear that comes to our mind. We should accept that Death is an inseparable part of life. If we are to live life honestly and without fear, we have to also accept that death is ultimately inevitable. Death should not cause us to live in fear, but rather to live our lives in the very best way that we can
Death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time… It tells us to tell each other right now that we love each other
Dying is easy; it’s living that’s difficult, so let’s live in love, happiness and humanity.
So influential and meaningful! I liked it so much.
More people prefer don’t be aware of their death time. Because, it cause fear and worried about that they have not enough time or They are afraid of the end of life. But, some believe that If we know the time of death, we be more care about our life time. Also, we know the value of life and try to get the most out of life.
I think that the quality of life is important, not how long we live. I am alive if I make the best for myself and others from every thing that I have.Otherwise I will be just a living person and it is no different than dying.
I like the way you think and totally agree with you.
I see. Here, we’re dealing with the dichotomy of “quality” and “quantity” of life. One of the related lessons listed above is “longevity” which refers to the number of years a person is expected to live. It’s better to pay attention to both of these elements, i.e. longevity and the quality of life.
Additionally, the short story, The Monkey’s Paw is surprisingly a great piece of literature on the current topic.

From my point of view, death is not something horrible. I do not want to talk about its religious part, but human body is made of cells. If the cells die, the person might die. If I was able to knew when I am going to perish, this would be a tragedy for me, because all the day, I would be overwhelming and pondering about my death. This is so complicated; I cannot think of such event. From my perspective, everything which is existed has a reason. If we do not know when we are going to die, it has got a reason. Mankind is alive by hope. If you see even an old man or woman, still she/he hopes to get or achieve what she couldn’t get yet. Nobody think of death until she/he dies.
If I knew that one of my friends or family would die in a particular time, surly I won’t tell him that he will die. According to the question, the person will die anyway, but at least he has this right to live in peace until his death approaches.
Good point, and I should say I agree with you about the cryptic time of death. Otherwise, as you mentioned correctly, life would be quite hellish, just counting down the remaining days or even hours until the kiss of death.
On the other hand, some people contend that upon knowing the exact time of their death, they would be able to manage their time and life more effectively. The other friends are encouraged to leave comments about this side of the token to arouse some counterarguments, as well.
Good thoughts! How some people believe that they can arrange their lives better rather than before. As I understood, it would be and it is better that we do not know the exact date of our death.
And another title or topic that is mentioned above is the amount of years. If I want to talk about myself, I am a person who has lots of hopes and wishes. I think I will be alive at least 60 more years which means till the age of 80, I will be alive and energetic.
That’s the right attitude to life with much optimism and hopefulness. I wish you a long life of happiness, productivity and prosperity.
