Much of human behavior is motivated by the promise of a reward. Extrinsic rewards are tangible, such a a paycheck after a week’s work. Intrinsic rewards come from within, such as the satisfaction of a job well done. Extrinsic and intrinsic rewards can be motivators that guide your career choice. Employees in the field of human services often find both extrinsic and intrinsic rewards in their line of work.

Extrinsic rewards are those you receive from others. In elementary school, for example, students may receive a sticker for getting all the words right on a spelling test. Throughout school, students get grades in every subject. Studies have shown that students are generally more motivated when they know their performance will be judged.

Extrinsic factors causing tripping or falling down are related to the person’s physical environment, including their home, such as poor lighting, slippery floors, or throw rugs. It also includes any assistive devices such as use of a cane, walker, or wheelchair and inappropriate clothing or footwear. Any of these can increase a person’s risk of falling.
