Assessment and score of the IELTS essay

Overall Assessment

Unfortunately, the essay falls significantly short of the IELTS standards required for a Band 5, which is the lowest passing score. The essay demonstrates serious issues in terms of coherence, cohesion, vocabulary, and grammar.

Specific Issues:

  • Task Achievement: The essay does not adequately address the prompt. It fails to discuss both arguments for and against investing in early childhood education programs. Instead, it focuses primarily on the importance of early childhood education without considering the potential drawbacks or alternative viewpoints.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: The essay lacks a clear structure and logical progression of ideas. The paragraphs are disjointed and there is little connection between sentences. The use of repetition and redundancy further hinders the overall coherence.
  • Lexical Resource: The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There is a clear lack of range and accuracy in word choice. Many words are misused or inappropriate in the context.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The essay contains numerous grammatical errors, including incorrect verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. These errors significantly impact the clarity and understanding of the message.

Suggested Band Score:

Based on the aforementioned issues, the essay would likely receive a band score of below Band 4.

Proofreading and Suggestions:

To improve the essay, the writer should:

  • Focus on the task: Address both arguments for and against investing in early childhood education programs.
  • Structure the essay: Develop a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
  • Expand vocabulary: Use a wider range of words to express ideas more accurately.
  • Check grammar: Pay attention to verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure.

    • This is just one single paragraph on the topic of early childhood education. You need to continue adding more paragraphs to compose an entire essay. Your essay should include at least, one introduction, one supporting paragraph, and one concluding paragraph.
