a formal and official investigation or inquiry into the causes of someone’s death or a failure or defect in something, examination, inspection, probe, analysis, autopsy, probing, postmortem, inquisition, quest, research

Example

The coroner may order a postmortem examination to determine the cause, identification of the remains or a corpse, document injuries, and to assist in determining the manner of death. A coroner usually orders a forensic autopsy or inquest if foul play is suspected.
