What is feng shui?

Feng shui is an ancient art and science that was institutionalized over 3,000 years ago in China. If we refer to literal translation, feng means “wind” and shui means “water”. In Chinese culture, water and wind are related to good health, so we can come to this conclusion that good feng shui brings good fortune. On the other hand, bad feng shui means misfortune.

Traditional Feng Shui

About 3000 years ago, in China, people wanted to ensure that their crops did not die and the buildings were built perfectly so as to avoid the cold winds of the north. So, they commenced finding principles in order to guarantee their needs. This study was narrowed down and led to focusing on “QI”.
QI is the Chinese word for “energy.” Everything either animate or inanimate has QI. Deepening their understanding of this subject, people, who had mastered this field, became able to determine the auspicious and inauspicious locations and directions in every place.
Following this study, people believed that there are five important elements for transferring energy, namely wood, fire, earth, metal and water. In fact, using these elements in the proper locations brings about flourish and success.

Contemporary Feng Shui

In an increasingly competitive world, people are coping with various difficulties and challenges and they have different priorities.
In detail, some people ask for progress in their careers, and monetary aspects of their life take precedence over the others. Some look for health or harmonious family relationships. So, Feng Shui masters have to tailor their advice to each client’s needs.
Moreover, today, there exist other issues such as air pollution, electromagnetic noises, global warming, etc. which menace living standards of humans and Feng Shui had better consider the above-mentioned issues as well.

Practicing Feng Shui at home

In order to practice feng shui at home, at first, you should pay attention to some general rules i.e. simplicity, like and joy. All of them are connected with energy, ergo keep in mind that every alteration should be performed in a way that contributes the energy level at home.
The second general rule is to get rid of cluttered stuff which has no benefit except consuming the nourishing energy. Air and light are essential in feng shui, so it is better to use the bona fide ones by allowing the fresh air and natural light to flow through your house.
The aforementioned methods were the general ones. Later, it’s time to take a look at more advanced ones. Here are some of them:
The aim of feng shui is to attract 8 types of luck by using Bagua map, elements, colors and symbols. Bagua map includes 8 directions which each of them is associated with of one of 5 essential elements and one of 8 lucks. Therefore, if you are intended to attract a specific luck, you have to use the associated elements in the proper direction. In addition, you can employ other elements which are in a productive cycle. For example, if the proper element is the plant, whether using water or soil is productive. Also, each of elements can be replaced with their symbols and colors as a quid pro quo.
