? Topic:

Nowadays, scholars in the field of education contend that formative assessment (as opposed to summative assessment), in which more consideration is given to the lengthy process of learning rather than final examinations, should be applied to academic education.

What is your viewpoint on this shift of emphasis in assessment? Please provide reasons or refer to your own experience.

The progress of students’ learning and instructors’ teaching should be evaluated meticulously in terms of efficiency. So, the assessment of learners’ knowledge could clarify all of the points. As per two views, the judgment of students could be done in a formative or summative way and I personally believe the former is the best.
To support my idea, firstly, it is better to monitor students through a period of time rather than relying on a specific examination and taking a snap decision. In fact, the average performance of students should be monitored and the process of judgment ought to be broken down into several steps. In doing so, the attempt of learners could be assessed accurately. In fact, in the formative method, the process of learning would be checked, whereas in the summative way, just the performance of students gets evaluated.
Moreover, summative assessment pushes students to go through overnight study. Actually, when students strive to learn new subjects in a short period of time, not only cannot they master that subject but also they forget the new information very soon. Furthermore, the accuracy of summative judgments is under a question because if an industrious student contracts a disease on the exam day, he/she cannot show off his/her information perfectly.
To sum up, it seems to me that formative assessment is more practical and efficient compared to summative assessment because it evaluates the process of learning along with students’ performance.

✅ Error Correction:

  • Paragraph 1, Line 2: For ‘judgment’, use another verb, e.g. do, deliver, make, obtain, etc.
  • Paragraph 2, Line 2: ‘judgment’ is not a proper verb here. I recommend ‘evaluation’ or ‘assessment’.
  • Paragraph 2, Line 3: the learners’ attempts
  • Paragraph 3, Last line: information  competence
