naturally living or existing in a particular place or habitat and not coming from outside, native, homegrown, original, ethnic, local:
‘Native’ or ‘indigenous’ refers to a species or race that occurs naturally in an area (for this review, the UK), i.e. whose dispersal has occurred independently of deliberate human translocation. In general, a species or race thought to have occurred in an area since before the Neolithic can be considered to be native.

The term “indigenous” can mean “native,” as in indigenous peoples, but when coupled with species, is generally referring to the ecological definition occurring naturally in a prescribed area (that is, not introduced there by people). Indigenous species include those that are endemic: naturally occurring in an area, and furthermore, restricted entirely to that area. 90% of the flowering plant species that are indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands are also endemic, found nowhere else on Earth.

For Australian Indigenous people in custody, ‘cultural engagement’ was significantly associated with non-recidivism. The observed protective impact of cultural engagement is a novel finding in a correctional context. Whereas identity alone did not buffer recidivism directly, it may have had an indirect influence given its relationship with cultural engagement. The findings of the study emphasize the importance of culture for Indigenous people in custody and a greater need for correctional institutions to accommodate Indigenous cultural considerations.
