Prior to requesting a loan guarantee, the lender must underwrite and approve the loan. The underwriting analysis is a detailed evaluation of key elements of borrower experience and creditworthiness, market conditions, the value of improvements, and the ability of the property to attract the rents needed to generate sufficient cash flow to support the loan’s debt service. The lender underwriting must identify and evaluate all of the factors that could affect loan performance. Such factors must be reflected in the underwriter’s conclusions detailed in the lender’s narrative.

U.S.-based insurance broker Marsh Inc. has come under pressure over its support for Indian conglomerate Adani Group’s Carmichael coal mine and rail project in the Australian state of Queensland, The Guardian reports. Marsh had been attempting to arrange insurance for elements of the project after many of the world’s top-tier insurers publicly said they would not underwrite the project.
