  1. The central theme of this short story is duty vs. family. Carter Druse finds himself in a complicated situation. He must whether disobey his state or his filial duty. Which for this, the story is very disturbing.

    • This dramatic short story portrays an internal conflict that the protagonist is dealing with. This conflict is about the dilemma between assuming one’s responsibility as a soldier and fighting against or injuring one’s family members, especially father. For this reason, the story revolves around the negative impacts of war on society and human relationships, which could also lead to patricide.
