Longevity is determined by a variety of factors including location, relationship, genetics, lifestyle, environment and socioeconomic status. During the past few centuries, average life expectancy has increased globally and average life expectancy at birth is now 78.8 years in the United States. Some estimates place the maximum possible human lifespan between 120 and 150 years old, however this upper limit has not yet been achieved with the oldest-living people reaching around 120 years old.

“The simple act of getting out of the house every day propels people into engagement with the world,” said lead author Dr. Jeremy Jacobs in a phone interview.

“We saw similar benefits that you’d expect from treating blood pressure or cholesterol with medicine,” Jacobs said. “Social factors are important in the process of aging.”

Research dating back to the late 1980s has consistently shown that aerobic fitness may help extend lives. Yet a few studies on athletes examining whether habitual vigorous exercise might harm the heart made some experts wonder how hard people ought to push when exercising.
