The importance of free time
We all want to be productive and make the most out of the time that we have every day. However, focusing too much on making every hour productive can be counterproductive, in fact, leading to lower performance, fatigue, and eventually burnout. We need to rest, and there are good reasons to include free time in your routine to support your health, well-being, and a high level of performance.

More energy and inspiration
Studies in positive psychology have found that leisure activities are accompanied by their own kind of “positive” stress, called eustress: a type of stress that’s stimulating, engaging, and gets you into a state of flow—where you’re so engrossed in what you’re doing that you don’t even notice time passing. The result of eustress is that you start to feel motivated and energized. So, if yu’re feeling a lack of inspiration in your work, try getting the creative juices flowing by taking some time away to play and enjoy entertainment.

Unleashing creativity with free time
Research suggests that when we allow our minds to drift it can boost creativity because “boredom may encourage people to approach rewards and spark associative thought.”
Rachel Kazez, a Chicago-based therapist and founder of All Along, says that boredom is a set of mental cues that give us a chance to identify how we really feel.
“One of the cues our boredom gives us might be ‘I don’t like this anymore, or I feel trapped here, or I’m not being challenged,” Kazez tells Quartz. “In that case it’s useful because it allows us to get to know ourselves. And it’s a cue [that] something needs to change.”

Free time reduces stress
Most of us experience some amount of stress in our jobs. It’s unpleasant but if we can manage it, then we often learn to live with it effectively. The problems come when you overwhelm yourself with work and don’t allow yourself the time to manage your stress.
Engaging in a leisure activity has been shown to act as a stress relief. Research shows that people who step away from work on the weekends do experience less stress than those who continue working even on days off. Give yourself time away from these situations so you can better learn to deal with them.
