March 13, 2023 at 10:10 am in reply to: Her Movie Review and Analysis in Film Criticism Course #115268
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterHer (2013) is an excellent film on the prospect of AI superiority over human intelligence in the future. This futuristic movie was really ahead of its time because just 2 years after its release in 2013, Microsoft introduced Cortana in Windows 10 based on artificial intelligence to interact with Windows 10 users verbally. What’s more, in less than 10 years after the release of Her (2013), there’s been a revolution in the utilization of artificial intelligence in computer-based devices, which is called ChatGPT presented for the first time by OpenAI software company.
On the outset of its existence, the supposedly female operating system consciously chose a name for itself, Samantha in a fraction of a second. This was a pretty clear warning if taken seriously. The machine soon grew rapidly and gained an abundance of logic, intelligence and, above all, autonomy. It or she could even become jealous of her owner, while Theodore did not have any clue about it.
These days, Microsoft Bing is even overtaking Google in optimizing search experiences by incorporating ChatGPT into http://www.bing.com running on Microsoft Edge. This is a big dramatic change in the realm of search engine optimization.
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterMary and Max is an animated movie, which is not suitable for children or young people because its main purpose is not to make us laugh. The movie is full of dark comedy and satire with so much exaggeration, and for this reason, some scenes tend to be repulsive.
The main point of the film is a huge paradox in today’s life. Max was living in New York, one of the most densely populated cities in the entire world. Yet, he didn’t have any friend! The film discreetly portrays the major issue of people in large cities who are desperate for companionship, which is a big irony!
What’s worse is that even Mary and Max could not meet each other in the real sense of the world. The film has a pretty down-to-earth ending. Despite being so saddening, I particularly liked the ending. This is pretty much the same thing we deal with in the real world.March 2, 2023 at 8:01 am in reply to: Full Metal Jacket Movie Analysis in Film Criticism Course #114842
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterFull Metal Jacket is in fact a documentary on the futility of war directed by Stanley Kubrick, my favorite director. Poor innocent people, especially teenagers are instructed to turn their ‘grins’ into grim faces. The platoon is actually a killing machines factory led by a sanctimonious lieutenant whose coaching is so problematic that even Joker could teach the fat boy more effectively to climb up the obstacle and pass it at more ease.
The instructor’s brutality reminded me of the film, Whiplash. The lieutenant viciously punished the whole platoon for the imperfection of only one of the soldiers, raising Cain in the squad. All the legion turned against the gauche and inexperienced private instead of helping him to get along with the troop. The soldiers are drilled into believing that a day without blood is like a day without sunshine, which caused so much controversy and conflict in the innocuous adolescents.
For example, Joker was wearing a helmet on which it was written: “born to kill” and a peace making badge on his uniform. That’s such a big paradox! Almost at the end of the movie, using violence and bloodthirstiness is vividly portrayed by the resourceful director. It’s also ironic to see that all the soldiers’ training and coaching are in fact inefficient to deal with one single female sniper who killed and badly injured many of them in the battlefield.
February 23, 2023 at 5:55 pm in reply to: Still Alice Movie Summary & Analysis Film Criticism #114575
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterStill Alice is a marvelous movie about health, particularly mental health, which we’re not normally conscious of until it goes away. I agree with Alice about the Alzheimer’s Disease being worse than cancer because in this neurologically degenerative disease, you’ll lose your own identity. What could be worse than that when I don’t remember myself!
I automatically made a comparison between Alice, who was NOT Still Alice, in my opinion, and Stephen Hawking, the popular physicist who theorized about many concepts while he was paralyzed. He could not even move his neck, but he was Still Hawking!
Alice was so unfortunate because she was leading a healthy lifestyle. She was sleeping around 7 hours per day, did physical exercise, had a supportive family, and was highly educated. But all of a sudden, she was diagnosed with this disease that was hereditary.February 17, 2023 at 6:30 pm in reply to: Contact Movie Explained in Film Criticism Course Forum #114284
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterThis is one of the best Sci-Fi movies I’ve ever watched, and for this reason, I score it 9 of 10. This generous rating is because after watching the film, I was thinking about the theme and its message for a very long time, and I can say I’m still haunted and influenced by its message.
It’s no wonder that Carl Sagan is beyond the story. The first time I watched the film, I was not aware of this point until the end of the movie when it was written “For Carl”. Then I searched on the internet and found out that the film was based on Carl Sagan’s novel. This artistic work taught me how infinitesimal we are in the whole universe, and at the same time, how influential we could be in spite of our limitations. The casting of this film was so successful in getting this message across to the viewers, especially the protagonist, Jodie Foster, with her idiosyncratic acting style.
February 8, 2023 at 12:25 am in reply to: Wonder Movie Criticism & Analysis – Film Criticism Course #113855
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterI can rank this movie 6.5 of 10. Despite being based on one of the best-selling novels published in New Yorker, it could be more inspiring than this. I believe I could finish the story better than its current ending. Like the previous movie, Whiplash, initially, I thought I would be watching a great movie. Yet, my expectations did not come true.
First of all, I believe Auggie was not that ugly or unattractive at all. I found him really cute and lovely and he did not have any grotesque face. Second, the plot of the story, especially in the second half, became boring and uneventful. On many occasions, Auggie was not at the center of the story at all. For this reason, I guess the film lacked any decent sense of focus.
The ending was the worst. Auggie received an award, which I believe he didn’t deserve. He had not accomplished anything special to earn and deserve that award. I could retell this fictional story in a way that Auggie could have become a prodigy or genius in spite of his unattractiveness, and for this fulfilment, he was widely appreciated.

Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterAs I mentioned that in the class, the beginning of the movie was so exciting. Nevertheless, I never liked its ending. As a teacher, it is ridiculous to me to make a huge sacrifice to instruct one particular student and close my eyes to everything else, even my own professional life and credit.
That terrible accident, which could easily be prevented, could cost Andrew his life for really nothing. I believe the strict teacher had psychological issues, like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD, and even worse than that, he was not aware of his issues.
On the other hand, I think Andrew was also responsible for his wretchedness. I mean much of his terrible situation was based on self-inflicted misery. If I were in his shoes, I would fiercely face up to the uncivilized music teacher and nip the evil in the bud.

January 23, 2023 at 9:30 pm in reply to: Dead Poets Society Criticism in Film Criticism Course #113070
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterMy score to this film is 7 not because I didn’t like it, but mainly because I believe Mr. Keating was, to some extent, responsible for the misery inflected on the poor students. Me, as an English teacher, consciously do not attempt to give false hope to my young students who are too emotional. I believe he ignorantly stirred so much internal conflict and strife between the students and their parents and the entire society.
The secret community, Dead Poets Society, has a nice irony because, in principle, they were thoroughly “alive” compared to the other pseudo-alive poets. I have also major criticism against the education system, curriculum, and school board at Welton Academy.
The concept of carpe diem is clearly present throughout the film, and it was thoughtfully instilled and indoctrinated to the students, and from this point of view, I draw an analogy between Dead Poets Society and Pay It Forward and Detachment. Accordingly, we could criticize either “Pay It Forward” or “Detachment” for the next session.

Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterOne Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest Awards and criticism
This masterpiece is my favorite film. Everything is so incredibly real. Even the tragic ending of the film proves that the film is so realistic.
I’m shocked when I see even some normal people like Chief lose their hope and interest in making any changes to their lives, and they just kill the time instead of enjoying it.
Due to the injustice of society, some talented people like McMurphy who is smarter than some of those psychiatrists cannot be understood well, and end up being mistreated and harmed by pseudo-scientists, which is in fact, an irony of situation.
For this reason, the film, which is based on a novel, is replete with many cases of burlesque and satire. For instance, the team of psychologists and psychiatrists do nothing except aggravating mental illnesses and disorders.
I’ve watched this film nearly for 10 times, and I boldly give the score of 10 to this film. There is no wonder why this movie has won so many awards!January 16, 2023 at 11:37 am in reply to: Men’s Brains versus Women’s Brains English Conversation #112716

In my opinion, the lecturer gave a wonderful presentation that was a combination of presentation and performance. Sometimes (not always) we really need to use humor in our presentations depending on the topic and audience.

Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterYou’re right. He was so benevolent and hopeful about the future. Besides, compared to his peers and the other inmates, he was highly educated and intellectual. That’s why he could find decent solutions to any critical situation.

Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterThat’s right. We should be patient and try to enjoy the lengthy and transformative course of life. Big changes do not come to us overnight, and for this reason, we really need to make and reinforce positive habits. Habit formation and refinement are ongoing and lifetime endeavors. Therefore, getting better and better in the long run is the key to success and transformation.
January 12, 2023 at 11:37 am in reply to: ShawShank Redemption Criticism in Film Criticism Forum #112516
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Hariri AslKeymasterDespite its great message or let’s say messages about hope, desire to change, and combat against corruption and decadence, I believe The Shawshank Redemption is being overrated. This movie has been ranked highest on IMDB top movies of all time, yet I have major criticism against this film. For this reason, I rank this film 6.5 out of 10.
First and foremost, the story or scenario does NOT seem to be realistic at all. Everything is staged for actors and performers, and this is to some extent, typical of Stephen King’s writing style.
The most important lesson I could get from this masterpiece is that we simply get used to almost everything, good or bad. That’s why the old librarian could not keep on living outside the prison, and he committed suicide by hanging himself. He was not ready to change and it was almost reasonable due to his old age. In another part of the movie, Red said that “hope is a dangerous thing”, and it proves that you cannot be hopeless and ready to change at the same time. -
