  • Some people are just more talented or blessed with the sixth sense. We can say they’re more intuitive by nature.
In my idea, the little boy didn’t tell Dr. Malcom about him being a ghost because he thought Dr. Malcom was already aware of that.

As a horror movie with a ghost story, The Sixth Sense is a success. However, I didn’t like the name selected for this movie. I consider the sixth sense to be more comprehensive and broader. It should not be limited to communicating with the dead. In my idea, the sixth sense and intuition are mysterious abilities or talents that are inborn and could be acquired to some extent through critical thinking, gaining general knowledge about the fundamentals of the universe, meditation, and the like.

The ending of the movie was a big surprise for me. If I got the story right, the child psychologist was a ghost in the film from the first moment when he saw the clairvoyant boy, and I had no idea about that until the last moment.

Awakenings is a great film based on a true story in which a compassionate neurologist is willing to go the extra mile to help the patients unconditionally in a mental institution or psychiatric hospital. He constantly thinks outside the box and practices critical thinking to come up with practical and actionable methods to treat the patients, such as checking their reflexes, applying music therapy, putting new medications to use, and making close observations on the patients.

This movie opened my mind to my healthy mind and body, which is most of the time taken for granted. I really liked the message in Dr. Sayer’s speech at the end of the film when he said, “Human spirit is more powerful than any drug”.

in reply to: Fantastic Mr. Fox Movie Review in Film Criticism Course #116726

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a comic animated movie that emphasizes the importance of change in life. Despite being a wild animal, ordinary Mr. Fox alters the course of his life and his family to become Fantastic Mr. Fox. Mr. Fox turns out to be extremely successful and happy by combating his own nature and nurturing his talents and behavior. The film is intended to teach us that in the dichotomy of nature vs. nurture, the latter plays a much more significant role in determining one’s fate. For this reason, this great movie is aimed at instilling existentialism into the minds of its viewers.

in reply to: Interstellar Movie Review in Film Criticism Course Forum #116494

Interstellar aroused different emotions in me because it juxtaposed emotionality and science with each other. If I were in the main character’s shoes, I wouldn’t be strong enough – as he was – to leave my daughter, the very scene that made some tears roll down from my eyes.

The film was so influential, thanks to its great visual effects and story, in transferring some knowledge about black holeswormholes, and the concept of time being so relative. Despite being a relatively long movie, I didn’t feel bored with it as it made me genuinely curious to see the ending.

The film opened up my mind and encouraged me to think more holistically about the entire universe. At the same time, I learned to cherish and treasure the existence of the people I love, especially my daughter.

in reply to: 2001 A Space Odyssey Explained in Film Criticism Course #116271

After more than 5 decades from the release of this Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, there’s still much room for analysis and positive criticism. This is largely because the story or screenplay is so ahead of its time.

In the first section, and in the 3 subsequent ones, the monolith is the key to evolution and civilization. This evolution goes on until the protagonist becomes invincible.

I should also point it out that the classical music of the film was a wise selection as it’s created a deep and great ambience in the film. After 2001: A Space Odyssey, this classical music has been the prototype of almost all moving pictures about space.

in reply to: Groundhog Day Movie Review in Film Criticism Course #116102

Groundhog Day is a special movie that superficially seems to be comic. Nevertheless, upon more consideration, you can realize that it’s a great movie with moral lessons. The loop of time in which Bill Murray was trapped taught him precious lessons and made him be a changed person gradually. This gradual change in his attitude is at the center of the film.

Groundhog Day has influenced me significantly as I’ve learned to add spice and dynamism to my life and get away from routines. I learned that even immortality could be intolerable, and helping and loving others can open your heart and mind. Loving others is the message we hear from extremely old people who are dealing with death.

Phil voluntarily helped the beggar on the street. He also moved forward from romance to pure love toward Rita, and above all, he mindfully kept distance from egocentrism and vanity and got closer to philanthropy and benevolence.

I also learned that conscious changes are always good. I cannot forget it when Phil, in the end, said, “today is finally tomorrow!”

I’m glad you liked this movie so much that you ranked it 10 of 10. As you said, Danny was so smart and acted so well in his role. In fact, Danny and the cook were the only people who could see the Shining. Danny’s parents were literally blind to the shining, and therefore, couldn’t see the menace or threat that was just in the corner.

The ending of the film meant that Jack was supposed to be dead in the hotel and it was a part of his destiny. That’s why his picture in a black suit alongside the other dead residents of the hotel was hanging from the wall of the Overlook Hotel.

in reply to: The Shining Movie Review in Film Criticism Course Forum #115888

The Shining movie has borrowed its name from our shining instinct of intuition that was more shining and stronger in Danny compared to his parents. In fact, Danny’s imaginary friend who lived in his mouth was so clairvoyant. In addition, the film centralizes the concept of déjà vu as Jack said he had seen the hotel before. In Danny’s case, it was premonition or prewarning.

The shining could be classified as both horror and psychological movies. It is a horror movie because at the beginning of the film, we realized that the hotel had been built on a burial ground. On the other side, from a psychological point of view, any person in their situation could develop some mental disorders, like hallucination, schizophrenia, and so forth.

Furthermore, the English proverb of “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” was reechoed in this film when Jack had written nothing but this phrase on the typewriter.

in reply to: The Bucket List Movie Analysis in Film Criticism Course #115669

The Bucket List movie is intended to teach us how to get the most out of our limited time. Life is precious and should be treated with care and awareness. In this film, cancer brought joy and excitement to the mundane lives of the main 2 actors. This is because they were determined to manage their time more precisely. From this point of view, this film has something to do with The Dead Poets Society, in which the concept of carpe diem is centralized.

in reply to: Her Movie Review and Analysis in Film Criticism Course #115268

Her (2013) is an excellent film on the prospect of AI superiority over human intelligence in the future. This futuristic movie was really ahead of its time because just 2 years after its release in 2013, Microsoft introduced Cortana in Windows 10 based on artificial intelligence to interact with Windows 10 users verbally. What’s more, in less than 10 years after the release of Her (2013), there’s been a revolution in the utilization of artificial intelligence in computer-based devices, which is called ChatGPT presented for the first time by OpenAI software company.
On the outset of its existence, the supposedly female operating system consciously chose a name for itself, Samantha in a fraction of a second. This was a pretty clear warning if taken seriously. The machine soon grew rapidly and gained an abundance of logic, intelligence and, above all, autonomy. It or she could even become jealous of her owner, while Theodore did not have any clue about it.
These days, Microsoft Bing is even overtaking Google in optimizing search experiences by incorporating ChatGPT into http://www.bing.com running on Microsoft Edge. This is a big dramatic change in the realm of search engine optimization.

in reply to: Mary and Max Movie Analysis in Film Criticism Course #115107

Mary and Max is an animated movie, which is not suitable for children or young people because its main purpose is not to make us laugh. The movie is full of dark comedy and satire with so much exaggeration, and for this reason, some scenes tend to be repulsive.
The main point of the film is a huge paradox in today’s life. Max was living in New York, one of the most densely populated cities in the entire world. Yet, he didn’t have any friend! The film discreetly portrays the major issue of people in large cities who are desperate for companionship, which is a big irony!
What’s worse is that even Mary and Max could not meet each other in the real sense of the world. The film has a pretty down-to-earth ending. Despite being so saddening, I particularly liked the ending. This is pretty much the same thing we deal with in the real world.

Full Metal Jacket is in fact a documentary on the futility of war directed by Stanley Kubrick, my favorite director. Poor innocent people, especially teenagers are instructed to turn their ‘grins’ into grim faces. The platoon is actually a killing machines factory led by a sanctimonious lieutenant whose coaching is so problematic that even Joker could teach the fat boy more effectively to climb up the obstacle and pass it at more ease.

The instructor’s brutality reminded me of the film, Whiplash. The lieutenant viciously punished the whole platoon for the imperfection of only one of the soldiers, raising Cain in the squad. All the legion turned against the gauche and inexperienced private instead of helping him to get along with the troop. The soldiers are drilled into believing that a day without blood is like a day without sunshine, which caused so much controversy and conflict in the innocuous adolescents.

For example, Joker was wearing a helmet on which it was written: “born to kill” and a peace making badge on his uniform. That’s such a big paradox! Almost at the end of the movie, using violence and bloodthirstiness is vividly portrayed by the resourceful director. It’s also ironic to see that all the soldiers’ training and coaching are in fact inefficient to deal with one single female sniper who killed and badly injured many of them in the battlefield.

in reply to: Still Alice Movie Summary & Analysis Film Criticism #114575

Still Alice is a marvelous movie about health, particularly mental health, which we’re not normally conscious of until it goes away. I agree with Alice about the Alzheimer’s Disease being worse than cancer because in this neurologically degenerative disease, you’ll lose your own identity. What could be worse than that when I don’t remember myself!
I automatically made a comparison between Alice, who was NOT Still Alice, in my opinion, and Stephen Hawking, the popular physicist who theorized about many concepts while he was paralyzed. He could not even move his neck, but he was Still Hawking!
Alice was so unfortunate because she was leading a healthy lifestyle. She was sleeping around 7 hours per day, did physical exercise, had a supportive family, and was highly educated. But all of a sudden, she was diagnosed with this disease that was hereditary.
